英国教师在汕头
A Foreigner in Shantou

每年8月份，汕头市外语外贸学校牛津中心都会有新的外籍教师到任。“牛津外教看汕头”系列记录了外教在汕头工作和生活的奇妙经历和感受，供广泛英语学习者阅读和分享。
Daisy是来自英国的一名青年教师，2013年8月到校后，很快适应当地的生活和工作环境，她很感谢学校让他们有机会来到汕头工作，从而更加了解中国，尤其是这里的食物，让他们品尝到生活的美好。以下便是Daisy老师来学校教学一学期后的体会。
I grew up on a dairy farm in Cornwall,
South West England, camping, milking cows, riding horses and walking our dog
around the acres of green fields and woodland; a country girl through and
through. But as much as I loved my surroundings, I dreamt of exploring different
lands, immersing myself in new cultures and experiencing exciting new
environments. Prior to 25th September 2013, I had travelled a little in Europe
and been on holiday to America,
but nothing had prepared me for the amazing city of Shantou. I have never before lived in such a
big, bustling city, so many people busily going about their daily lives. The
traffic was a new experience entirely and at first I felt as though I was
taking my life into my hands each time I crossed the road. Once I had grasped
that the green light for pedestrians didn't actually guarantee no oncoming
vehicles, as it would in the UK,
it became a much safer situation! Walking along the streets, past numerous food
stalls and tea shops, my nose was filled with so many tempting and intriguing
new smells. I am used to drinking big cups of tea with milk, so trying the tea
in Shantou, no
milk and in little cups, was a new experience. I love the different flavours
and varieties of tea here, and the different types of snacks that we have with
them. I have tried all sorts of new foods, such as spicy duck neck, which was
very hot, but tasty. I wasn't sure what to expect, whether the food would be
similar to the Chinese food we eat in the UK or completely different. I have
found that it is very different, but absolutely delicious. I particularly
enjoyed the food we had a school barbecue; squid, beef steak, oysters, clams
and much more, all cooked by the wonderful students in classes 134, 129 and
119. The students I teach at Shantou Foreign Language and Business Academy
are great. Lessons are a pleasure and the staff and students alike have made me
feel so welcome and supported in this new and exciting venture. There are so
many places to explore in Shantou
and the surrounding cities, I am really looking forward to the rest of my time
here.
